Freshman Admission

Applying for Freshman Admission

Following the completion of the junior year of high school, the freshman applicant may submit the completed application (including the Leadership and Activity Record and Personal Statement), non refundable $50 application fee, and SAT I/ACT scores to the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Georgia Tech will not accept a photocopy or faxed version of the application. Applicants may apply by computer at www.apply.gatech.edu.

Self Reported Academic Record and High School Transcript

As a freshman applicant, you must complete Part IV of the application, the Self-Reported Academic Record. Georgia Tech uses the Self-Reported Academic Record to make a preliminary review of your academic performance in high school and to offer provisional admission.

It is very important that you complete the Self-Reported Academic Record accurately. To do so, refer to grade reports and transcripts from your high school. You must list all academic course work and grades even if a course is repeated.

If you are admitted and plan to enroll, you must arrange to have an official high school transcript sent to Georgia Tech's Office of Undergraduate Admission by July 1st. We will use official high school transcripts to verify all grades. Any discrepancies may invalidate an offer of admission.

Students who have studied outside of the United States and home schooled students are required to submit additional documentation regarding high school courses and grades. Students studying outside of the U.S. refer to www.admiss.gatech.edu/international, and home schooled students refer to www.admiss.gatech.edu/homeschool for detailed information.

Required high school courses for the following fields of study:

Engineering, Science,
and Computing

College of Management

Architecture and Ivan Allen College

  • The title of the course is not important. All students planning to declare computing, engineering, science, liberal arts, and architecture majors should have a sufficient background to be able to schedule introductory calculus during their first term at Tech. At least one-half year of trigonometry is essential. Students planning to declare a Management major will have the option of scheduling Introductory Calculus or Survey of Calculus.
  • Two courses in one language emphasizing speaking, listening, reading, and writing are required.
  • A student who attends a Georgia high school should be aware that although a year of economics/government is not required for acceptance to Georgia Tech, it is a requirement for a high school College Preparatory Diploma.

Standardized Test Results

All applicants for admission must take the College Board SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) or the ACT (American College Test), which should be scheduled in spring of the junior year and may be taken again through the December test date of the senior year. Applicants for freshman admission to Georgia Tech who wish to enroll in the fall of 2008 will be required to submit the writing assessment portion of SAT or ACT.

December scores will not be considered for the President's Scholarship competition. January results may not meet the admissions application deadline.

Official test scores must be sent directly to Georgia Tech from the testing agency.

Georgia Tech's school code number for the SAT I is 5248, and the code for the ACT is 0818.

To contact the testing agencies, visit the following web sites:
SAT I: www.collegeboard.com
ACT: www.act.org

Admission Deposit

Following notification of their acceptance for admission to Georgia Tech, all accepted students planning to enter Tech as freshmen must submit a $250 acceptance deposit by May 1. If the $250 acceptance deposit is not received by May 1, the student's acceptance to Georgia Tech will be subject to immediate cancellation.

This deposit is not refundable for non-attendance except for an act of providence (e.g. death of a supporting parent). The deposit will be credited to the student's first-semester expenses upon matriculation.

Advanced Placement

Many superior students entering Georgia Tech are capable of demonstrating a thorough understanding of the subject matter addressed in initial undergraduate courses.

Such students may earn college credit or advanced standing at Georgia Tech by taking (1) a College Board Advanced Placement Test in conjunction with a designated high school advanced placement class; (2) an SAT II Subject Test; (3) a Georgia Tech departmental exam; or (4) an International Baccalaureate higher-level exam.

For a complete description of the required test scores and the corresponding credit that may be earned, visit www.admiss.gatech.edu/ap or call the Office of Undergraduate Admission at 404.894.4154.

Computer Ownership

In an effort to foster equal access to computers and to make the most of the teaching and learning technology available at Georgia Tech, all students are required to own or lease a computer.

Each spring the Office of Enrollment Services will notify accepted students of the minimum platform and software requirements established by the Student Computer Ownership Committee as well as purchasing and financing options.

Because computer ownership is mandatory, an average cost for the minimum platform and software will be included in computing each new student's cost of education for the purpose of determining their eligibility for all forms of student aid.

The Institute, in an attempt to see that the additional cost of purchasing a personal computer does not prevent students from enrolling, commits one-time funding to assist financially needy students with the partial cost of computer purchase.

Policy on Competitive Admission

All qualified persons are equally welcome to seek admission to the Georgia Institute of Technology, and all persons may apply for and accept admission confident that the policy and regular practice of the Institute will not discriminate against them on the basis of race, religion, sex, or national origin.

Projections of the number of students to be admitted and enrolled in any year will be determined (a) by the capacity of the Institute and (b) by approved enrollment levels. If the number of qualified applicants for admission exceeds the number of applicants who can be admitted and enrolled, those to be offered admission will be selected on the basis of (a) the Institute's judgment of the applicant's relative qualifications for satisfactory performance in the Institute and (b) recognition of the Institute's special responsibilities to the residents of Georgia.

The policy on competitive admission, set forth above, will not prevent the admission of selected applicants who give evidence of possessing special talents for the Institute's programs requiring such special talents. In the application of this policy of competitive admission to nonresident students, preference for admission may be given to nonresident applicants who are legacies of the Institute.

The admission of undergraduate students to pursue programs leading to a bachelor's degree shall be the responsibility of the Office of Undergraduate Admission. That office will apply policies and procedures that are approved by the Office of the President and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Preference for admission will be given to qualified residents of the state of Georgia.

The criteria used in determining each applicant's qualifications for admission shall include satisfactory evidence of scholastic promise based upon the applicant's previous academic record, scores on selected tests of aptitude or achievement, and evaluation of the applicant's Personal Statement and Leadership and Activity Record.

Appeals concerning individual admission decisions shall be addressed to the director of the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

This policy is in accordance with the Institute's Mission and Vision statement, which can be located at www.gatech.edu/president/strategic-plan.html.

Academic Honesty

A student initiative, the Academic Honor Code became official Georgia Tech policy in 1996. Students are required to sign an honor agreement acknowledging their awareness of the code.

The objective of the Academic Honor Code is to strengthen the level of academic integrity and trust within the Tech community.
