International Freshman Students

The Georgia Institute of Technology, an institution comprised of more than 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students, welcomes international students to its campus.

Currently, more than 3,000 students from countries other than the United States are valued members of the Georgia Tech community. Over twenty percent of Tech's international students are pursuing degrees at the undergraduate, bachelor's degree level.   Click here to view the countries represented by currently enrolled students.

Classification of International Student/Applicant

Georgia Tech classifies a student/applicant as “international” if they meet any of the criteria below.

  1. You are not a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident and are currently in the United States on an F-1 (student) visa.
  2. You will require an F-1 visa to enter and study in the United States.
  3. You are currently in the United States on some other class of visa. A copy of your visa from passport must be submitted for us to make a determination.  Please submit any documentation regarding Permanent Residency by fax (404-894-9511) or email to your designated admission counselor.

Tuition Classification:

Students/Applicants considered “international” will be considered for tuition classification the same non-GA Resident.  If you are a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident, you will be classified as a Regular Freshman Applicant; however, tuition classification would then be determined by state residency.  Please read the following regarding Permanent Legal Residency:

Permanent Legal Residency

  • If you are a Permanent Legal Resident of the United States, please submit a copy of the front and back of your green card for inspection.
  • If you are in the process of obtaining permanent legal residency, please submit all documentation related to this process. This would include, but not be limited to, an Employment Authorization Document, the form I-485, or your I-94 departure record.
  • If you hold refugee or asylum status, please forward all documentation related to this status.

* Please submit any documentation regarding Permanent Residency by fax (404-894-9511) or email to your designated admission counselor.

Admission Purposes:

Georgia Tech may require any applicant to submit a foreign credential evaluation of their coursework by an accredited foreign credential evaluation service if they have studied in a school outside the U.S.  A student could potentially be considered a regular freshman applicant (not international based on tuition classification) and still be required to submit the evaluation.

Admission Information

All students competing for freshman admission are considered using the same criteria regardless of classification (domestic or international).  Please visit www.admission.gatech.edu/freshman for criteria used to determine competitiveness for admission.  Your academic background should indicate that you are among the best in your class and a graduate of a secondary school consisting of 12 years or more beyond kindergarten. Your studies must include at least four years of mathematics and English, three years of science (including one year each of chemistry and physics).

How To Apply For Admission As A Freshman

All applicants must submit the on-line application.  The application may accessed, completed, and submitted (along with the application processing fee of $65) for freshman admission via www.apply.gatech.edu.  Freshman Applications received by mail are no longer accepted nor processed and will be returned to sender.  Certain supplemental documents however may be required to be submitted by mail.  In most cases, any documents needed by mail will be specifically requested.  Please do not send us any documentation that has not been requested or specified as an additional application requirement.  The freshman application will be available in mid-August.

Additional Application Requirements

  • Take the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I). The scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to Georgia Tech. Regardless of the system in which you have been educated, you must earn a minimum score of 440 on the critical reading portion of the SAT I to be considered for admission. Based on figures from previous years, your combined math, verbal, and writing SAT I score should be better than 1800 to be competitive for admission. Georgia Tech does not require prospective students to take any SAT II subject test or the TOEFL.

Foreign Credit Evaluation

Will I be required to submit a foreign credential evaluation?

Please review the following situations to determine if you will require a foreign credential evaluation:

Those needing a foreign credential evaluation:

  • Have been educated in a school outside the U.S. for more than two years (high school equivalence) that is not accredited by one of the following accepted accrediting agencies listed below.
  • Receiving a diploma from a U.S. accredited High School but only attended the diploma awarding school for the senior year.

Those not needing the foreign credential evaluation:

    • Educated outside the U.S. at a school accredited by one of the accrediting agencies listed below for at least two years and will be receiving a diploma.
    • Receiving a diploma from a U.S. accredited High School and began attending no later than the beginning of the junior year (11th grade).

    Accepted Accrediting Agencies

    • Association of Christian Schools International
    • Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation
    • Middle State  Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Elementary Schools
    • New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
    • North Central Association, Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement
    • National Independent Private School Association (NIPSA)
    • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
    • Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

If determined that a foreign credential evaluation is required to complete your application, there is no need to submit any transcripts or to complete the Self-Reported Academic Record portion of the application.  Those not requiring an evaluation must complete the Self-Reported Academic Record portion of the application.  If you still have questions concerning this requirement, please contact our office.

Foreign Credential Evaluation Guidelines

If determined that a foreign credential evaluation is required, below are the evaluation requirements:

  • Official English Translation
  • Document-by-Document (Course-by-Course is not necessary for freshman applicants)
  • Includes GPA calculation

The evaluation must be prepared by an accredited foreign credential evaluation service that names and describes all diplomas, certificates, degrees, periods of education or training and gives U.S. equivalencies for each.  We recommend using one of the following:

*We recommend you begin the evaluation process no later than December 1st.

Reason for Foreign Credential Evaluation

The Office of Undergraduate Admission sets the policies and requirements for admission to all of our undergraduate degree programs.  Different countries have different grading scales by which they evaluate students.  As the number of applications from international students continues to increase, our office must work to balance efficiency with having an accurate assessment of each student's academic background.  Along with these factors, we are also striving for consistency in these evaluations from student to student, within the same school, and across different measures of high school proficiency and that is why we are requesting that all students who attend a school outside of the U.S. must have their credentials evaluated by an agency that specializes in foreign documentation.  We request that the evaluation be document-by-document with a GPA calculation.  This is not a translation. The evaluation will describe equivalencies of schoolwork to that of an accredited program in the U.S. and a GPA calculation so that we may fairly consider your competitiveness with the entire applicant pool.

Deadlines

A completed application for Freshman Admission and all supporting credentials must be received by January 15.

In order to meet our January 15 deadline, it is recommended that all materials for a foreign credential evaluation be mailed to the agency by December 1.

Financing Your Education

For any student classified as “international” for tuition classification, they are ineligible for Financial Aid through the Georgia Tech Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.  Please understand that being a public institution includes an obligation to use the financial aid we have available to the domestic population.

Immigration (I-20s)

Almost all undergraduate students needing a visa to enter the country and attend Georgia Tech will do so by obtaining an F1 (student) visa. It is assumed that you will need to obtain an F1 visa unless the student indicates otherwise on the application.

In order to receive a F1 visa, Georgia Tech must first issue an I-20.  If a student will need an I-20 for F1 visa (or an I-20 to update their current F1 visa to Georgia Tech), please complete the International Applicant Financial Statement Form. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, download it free here.  This is necessary to demonstrate your ability, or the ability of an individual or government sponsor, to finance your education at Georgia Tech. Please read the instructions regarding the official bank documents outlined in the International Applicant Financial Statement Form.  The Financial Statement Form and supporting bank documents are not required in order to make an admission decision.  Only once a student is admitted and paid the $250 acceptance deposit are the documents requested or reviewed.

Due to possible changes in the financial status of the sponsor, Georgia Tech will not issue an I-20 sooner than six months prior to the expected enrollment date.
