Frequently Asked Questions - Transfer Admission

Does Georgia Tech accept applications for each semester?

Yes, we accept applications for fall, spring and summer semesters. Please refer to Application Deadlines on the transfer admission website to be sure to get your application submitted on time.

Are late applications accepted?

Due to the large volume of applications received for each term and the time that it takes to process all applications, only applications received by the Application Deadline and with all requirements met by the Document Deadline are guaranteed to be reviewed for the particular term. Interested students should make every effort to submit all materials on time and understand that late applications may not be accommodated.

Does it matter whether I have attended a public or private college or a two-year or four-year college?

We do not favor one type of school over another. However, the college must be accredited by one of several accrediting agencies. Coursework from any college must be deemed equivalent to Georgia Tech's curriculum in order to apply towards the admission requirements. Does Georgia Tech accept credits from online courses?

Georgia Tech generally does not accept online coursework for admission or transfer credit purposes. However, there are some exceptions and you should check the Transfer Equivalencies table at https://oscar.gatech.edu/ for specific schools and courses.

Will grades transfer to Georgia Tech?

No, but grades are computed into GPAs for the transfer admission evaluation.

Do I need to submit SAT or other test scores?

No, Georgia Tech does not require test scores such as SAT or ACT for transfer admission consideration. However, international students must submit TOEFL scores.

Do I have to submit a high school transcript?

Yes, an OFFICIAL high school transcript is needed for record-keeping purposes only but will not be used in making your admission decision.

Will my AP credit transfer?

Yes, provided that the credit shows on your college transcript. If not, you may submit your AP scores to us and credit will be awarded if the scores meet our requirements. You may also use AP credits towards fulfillment of the specific courses required for admission, but must complete at least 30 semester (or 45 quarter) hours of actual in-class course credits in addition to any AP course credits.

I have not completed all of the required courses, but can't I just take them when I get to Georgia Tech?

No, all required courses must be completed at another college BEFORE a decision will be made on your application. Please refer to the Course Requirements by Major chart. If this information affects your prospective enrollment date, please notify the Admission Office in writing to request a change to another term.

Why is there a “one-term” gap between when I finish the required courses and when I can possibly start at Tech?

A significant amount of time and energy is required by multiple offices on the Georgia Tech campus to get a new student started. There is not enough time between two consecutive semesters to receive and evaluate transcripts, make admission decisions, have transfer credits evaluated, assign registration ticket times, and take care of all auxiliary services (such as housing, parking, immunization records) needed for new students. Accepted students CAN continue taking courses at their current schools in the interim term and are encouraged to contact a Georgia Tech departmental academic advisor for assistance in ensuring that all courses transfer and apply towards the Tech degree.

Do I have to take Linear Algebra with my Calculus II?

Most other colleges and universities do not teach Linear Algebra with Calculus II as Georgia Tech does. Thus, while it is strongly recommended that you complete a separate Linear Algebra course at your current school, it is not required for admission consideration. Please be aware that if your prospective major at Tech requires the Linear Algebra component, you will have to complete it at Tech if you do not complete it prior to enrollment. Since space in this supplemental course is very limited, you should make every effort to take Linear Algebra at your current school.

What is a Lab Science “sequence?”

Majors that indicate a two-course “sequence” for the Lab Sciences require that you complete two 4-credit hour (lecture and lab), transferable courses in the same subject area (for example, two Biology courses each with lecture and lab). Please refer to the footnotes on the Course Requirements by Major chart where the details of the Lab Science requirements are explained in further detail.

Do I have to complete the Regents Reading; Writing tests at my current school or can I take them at Tech?

You may complete the tests at either school. Completion of the Regents tests is not required for transfer admission to Tech.

I don't meet Georgia Tech's transfer requirements. Can I enroll as a freshman?

No, Georgia Tech defines a transfer student as any student who has taken a college or university course after graduation from high school or left high school before graduating to enroll full time in college courses. A student may not disregard his or her college record to apply to Georgia Tech as a freshman.

How can I check the status of my application?

Applications will remain pending until official documentation of the completion of all requirements is received. To verify whether your specific documents have been received, you may use the online check system at http://www.apply.gatech.edu/checkapp/. While no decisions are posted online nor are they given via e-mail or phone, you may e-mail your transfer admission counselor to inquire about the status of your application.

When will I be notified of my admission decision?

Admission decisions for transfer students are made on a rolling basis after all requirements have been met and when all documents have been received by the appropriate document deadline. Decisions are sent via US mail and are never posted online nor are they given via e-mail or phone.

Depending on the volume of applications received for any given term, all decisions may not be made and letters not mailed until after the document deadline for that term.

If I meet the minimum requirements, is my acceptance guaranteed?

While admission to Georgia Tech is never guaranteed, students who have completed all minimum requirements – including specifically required courses, total number of transferable credit hours, and minimum GPA (both overall and math/science courses) – should be very competitive for admission.

Can I change my major after I am accepted or enrolled at Georgia Tech?

As a transfer student, you will be admitted to your chosen major based upon prerequisite course work, academic record, and enrollment openings within the college or school. Be aware that, should you wish to change your major after enrolling at Tech, your proposed major may have very competitive criteria for admission and your change of major may not be approved. Colleges and schools that are overcrowded normally prohibit transfer students from changing into these majors once enrolled at Georgia Tech.

I've been accepted. What do I need to do now?

Congratulations! We look forward to having you at Tech. Please follow all instructions included in your acceptance packet; including signing up for FASET orientation and submitting all required paperwork to the appropriate departments on campus (not all information is to be submitted to the admission office).

You must send your final official transcript, with no “in progress” or pre-registered courses for a future term listed, to the Office of Undergraduate Admission. If you do not do this in a timely manner, transfer credits and registration for future terms will be affected.
